Returnal patch 1.3.3 corrupting saves, but not all hope is lost

For all of you who haven’t figured it out yet, Returnal can be a total bitch. The roguelike tests your patience over and over again, throwing you back to the start after every failed run. Fortunately, some reached milestones trigger shortcuts and let you keep gathered items. It would be a damn shame if you’d lose those as well. People who’ve played Returnal after installing patch 1.3.3 found that out the hard way.

Luckily, Returnal developer Housemarque got the drop on it fairly quickly, urging people not to download patch 1.3.3. Everyone who already did should revert to the previous version before playing the game. Then again, for some, this recommendation might have come a little too late. If you’re one of the many who’ve lost their save file due to this stupid patch, here’s what you can do.

First of all, check your save file size. If it’s more than 0KB, you’re golden. Downloading patch 1.3.4 – which has been released to fix the previous one – will guarantee that your save still functions. If your save file unfortunately is 0KB, it’s dead. R.I.P. But there’s no need for writing a heartfelt eulogy yet because your cloud save might help you out here.

Downloading your last backed-up save file from the PlayStation Plus cloud could help you out of your tight spot. After downloading patch 1.3.4., you might try giving that a whirl. If that backup contains the corrupted save file, I’ve got bad news for you. You’ll really have to start all over again.

If only Returnal had manual saves…
