Ubisoft presents a brand-new Driver, but it’s not what you think

Remember the game Driver? If you were already gaming in the late 90s, you must have heard of this franchise. I sure recall spending way too many hours in the digital versions of Frisco, L.A., Miami, and the Big Apple. Yeah, John Tanner was the guy I desperately wanted to be, this former race car driver becoming an undercover cop. Well, all these memories are about to be revamped by Ubisoft because they’re breathing new life into the series. One major letdown should be mentioned: It’s gonna be a live-action series on Binge, a streaming service launching next year.

I know, it’s not exactly what you might have been hoping for. Then again, Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman, Danielle Kreinik, and Genevieve Jones don’t give a hoot. Together with producers Allan Ungar and Vincent Talenti, they just want to bring Driver back into this world in “new and exciting ways”. At least Danielle is stoked about it…

“Our mission at Ubisoft is to bring our games to life in new and exciting ways and create content set in the world, culture, and community of gaming. Working with Binge will allow us to bring a Driver series directly to the audience who is most passionate about seeing this franchise come to life.”

As per usual, the producers are also totally happy with this decision. Allan Ungar – who claims to be a Driver fan himself – really believes that this will do the franchise justice.

“As longtime fans of the franchise, we’re excited to deliver an original, premium, and rich storytelling experience that will take fans and newcomers on a thrilling ride.”

Of course, we’re no longer strangers to games made into a series. Games like Castlevania and The Witcher – which is getting a second season soon – are already going strong on Netflix. Even Ubisoft games are already being transformed, with an Assassin’s Creed series on the way. So maybe Driver won’t suck after all. I mean, I liked the Witcher, even though I totally thought that would bomb.
