Rock Band dev joins Epic Games to live in perfect Harmonix

Epic Games seeks to make its cash cow Fortnite even by adding some more jive to it. And who knows jive better than Harmonix, the studio behind rhythm games like Rock Band and Fuser? Precisely, nobody. That alone might already have been the incentive for Epic to spend some cash on the Massachusetts-based studio.

In case you just bought Fuser or invested heavily in Rock Band 4, there’s no reason to be alarmed. Harmonix isn’t pulling a Guitar Hero Live by bailing on its current games and leaving consumers empty-handed. As mentioned on Harmonix’s blog, all plans regarding DLC for Fuser and Rock Band 4 are still on the agenda. As far as servers go, these will stay online and both games will stay available on Steam and consoles.

But yes, Harmonix will have to put some focus on something new, namely Fortnite. Harmonix’s acquisition was set in motion “to create musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite”, as the studio puts it. Unfortunately, that’s all that the team has to share about it on their blog, for now, promising more info in the near future.

Needless to say, Epic is happy. Gaining extra resources that can help you create a music experience – resulting in even more stupid dance moves – is always good for one’s mood. Isn’t that right, Alain (Tascan, Epic’s VP of game development)?

“Music is already bringing millions of people together in Fortnite, from our emotes to global concerts and events. Together with the Harmonix team, we will transform how players experience music, going from passive listeners to active participants.”

And Harmonix seems to enjoy this new partnership as well, especially studio co-founder Alex Rigopulos.

“Harmonix has always aspired to create the world’s most beloved interactive music experiences, and by joining Epic we will be able to do this at scale. Together we will push the creative boundaries of what’s possible and invent new ways for our players to make, perform and share music.”

At least this is music to someone’s ears…
