Squenix Montréal, Eidos, and Crystal Dynamics got poached

It appears that developers Square Enix Montréal, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos Interactive were on the block, and the Swedes have wasted no knäckebröd on striking deals. The Embracer Group is willing to dish out $300 million for them. The deal isn’t closed yet, but after that, Embracer is gonna have a nice collection to put on display.

Yeah, those Swedish meatball-lovin’ investors ain’t fucking around, I tell ya. They were quick on the draw with THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, and Kock Media before. With the current bid out, it looks to get a hold of several heavy-hitting IPs. With a new Tomb Raider in early development, Embracer couldn’t pick a better time to swoop it up.

But it won’t stop there. As mentioned in Embracer Group’s press release, it’s also acquiring the Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, Thief, and 50 back-catalog game IPs. When all is done and done, 1100 employees spread over 8 locations get to enjoy filmjölk and Macka for breakfast. As for the execs at Embracer, they’ll be smiling over the ownership of 124 studios. With a total of 230 games in development, there’s bound to be a success that’ll justify the heavy spending.

But that’s not really concerning anyone right now. As usual, after a takeover deal, everyone is super happy about it. There’s not one person at Eidos, SE Montréal or Crystal Dynamics who’s like “Nah dude, effing sucks donkey balls”. The world couldn’t be a better place right now. Just listen to Lars Wingefors, co-founder and CEO of the Embracer Group:

“We are thrilled to welcome these studios into the Embracer Group. We recognize the fantastic IP, world-class creative talent, and track record of excellence that have been demonstrated time and again over the past decades.

“It has been a great pleasure meeting the leadership teams and discussing future plans for how they can realize their ambitions and become a great part of Embracer.”

Good for you, man. Good for you. Do your thing. And please, do something with The Legacy of Kain while you’re at it. We’ve been waiting on a decent new installment for ages now. If you do that, I’ll promise to go easy on the Swedish meatball jokes.
