E3 2021 going all-digital

E3 2021 back on the map as all-digital event

Are you ready for a World Premiere? In that case, the ESA has got news for you. E3 2021 is going all-digital this year. After being canceled as a physical event, fans all over the world can now tune in from the comfort of their own couch. Several heavy hitters have already pledged their allegiance to the ESA, but others seem to opt-out.

Remember E3 2020? It would be rather funny if you did because there was no E3 2020. Due to the uprising of COVID-19, the Entertainment Software Association decided to drop the event altogether. Publishers took matters into their own hands and hosted their own digital showcases, which worked out just fine. But this year, E3 hopes to bring all those developers and publishers back together under the E3 banner, even if it’s in a digital format.

Capcom, Konami, Microsoft, Nintendo, Tale-Two, Ubisoft, Waner Bros, and Koch Media already signed up for the gig. Sony is skipping E3 once more, as they have been doing for the last couple of years. According to Gamesindustry.biz, other big names like EA, Activision Blizzard, Sega, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix are also not going to appear.

Stanley Pierre-Louis – president and CEO of the ESA – is still pretty confident that E3 is gonna be the bomb. And why wouldn’t it be? I mean, it’s the greatest gaming event of all time, right?

“For more than two decades, E3 has been the premier venue to showcase the best that the video game industry has to offer while uniting the world through games. We are evolving this year’s E3 into a more inclusive event, but will still look to excite the fans with major reveals and insider opportunities that make this event the indispensable center stage for video games.”

In other news, gamescom still seems to be aiming for the hybrid approach. Kölnmesse believes that a mixture between digital and on-site is still a viable option unless the COVID-shit hits the fan. Fingers crossed! The digital edition of E3 kicks off on June 12 and lasts until June 15.
