Jeff Ross going for the jugular, lashes out at Sony some more

I think it’s fair to say that Sony Bend isn’t the place to go if you’re looking for happy people. After the shitshow called Days Gone, devs that we’re once a beaming ray of sunshine became a depressing low-pressure area. If you have no idea of what I’m talking about, do a search on John Garvin and Jeff Ross. The latter has made headlines this week by claiming that Sony’s responsible for making Days Gone look like a failure. Powerful stuff. But Jeff is like that annoying dude on the Tommy Teleshop channel because wait… there’s more!

Indeed, Jeff “Not the roaster, but the game director” Ross isn’t quite done yet. Talking to David Jaffe on his live stream, Ross scooched together with aforementioned John Garvin to spew a little more. As you might expect, Jaffe wasn’t looking for reconciliation with Sony Bend. He was looking for dirt. And dirt he got, flung at him as if the former Bend-devs were making burnouts on Deacon St. John’s motorcycle.

Of course, Days Gone and the fumbled pitch of a sequel formed a thick red line in this convo. I mean, if you’re going rampant on Twitter by saying your ex-employer fucked you over, you’re gonna get questions. And both gentlemen were very willing to give answers to Jaffe. When David pried into topics like Days Gone 2 and negotiations with Sony, this is what Jeff Ross had to add.

“I think it [Days Gone 2] was dead on arrival. It did get reviewed on a level right above the studio, but I don’t think it went any further than that. The reviews were through the lens of, ‘the first one was a trainwreck in so many ways and didn’t sell awesome’ and, ‘let’s just keep these guys busy’.”

“It was very obvious that we shouldn’t be talking about Days Gone when we were working on the pitch [for our next game]. It was clear that it was a non-starter and there was nothing in the [Days Gone 2] pitch that made the local manager and his boss feel good about it. That’s probably a failure of the creative group… it was just an uphill battle.”

Ross added that the ‘let’s just keep the guys busy’ thing eventually ended up in a suggestion from Sony’s side. A suggestion that just didn’t sit right with him.

“It was just an ask: ‘are there any other IPs that we have that we can use?’ and the only other IP was Syphon Filter. But honestly, I have zero ideas on how to reboot Syphon Filter. I was not interested in that at all.”

“It was almost like a ‘keep them busy’ type of question: ‘hey guys, why don’t you come up with something for Syphon Filter while we figure out what we’re confident in pitching’. So I don’t think it was ever genuine.”

Jeff Ross be like: “Wut? How About no?”

But if Sony was really looking to keep Jeff busy, he was willing to chip in with a pitch of his own: an open-world Resistance game. If we’re to believe him on his word, Jeff had it all figured out. But Sony apparently shot the pitch down, like a Freaker within point-blank radius.

“The pitch I was making was, open-world Resistance would be fucking rad,” he said. “There were all of these open-world loops that we figured out… it almost wrote itself with Resistance: there were so many aspects of that property that lent itself to open-world gameplay.”

“But they weren’t interested in that either. I don’t know how well it sold. They were interested in almost anything other than Days Gone 2.”

Poor Jeff Ross. Imagine being him, feeling seriously penetrated in the sphincter by the Mighty Sony. One so full of joy and glee, now just a bittered bearded baldy. Yeah, try saying that ten times in a row. Bittered bearded baldy…
