Wattson's Charged Conquistador skin

“Charged Conquistador” skin Apex Legends renamed after backlash

Last updated:

It turns out that calling one of your legendary skins “Charged Conquistador” is a no-no nowadays. Respawn – the developer of free-to-play powerhouse Apex Legends – found that out the hard way. The word conquistador apparently made quite a few gamers feel uncomfortable after Googling its meaning.

In case you don’t feel like running the word conquistador through your search engine of choice, here’s the general definition.

Conquistador

/kɒnˈkwɪstədɔː,kɒnˈkɪstədɔː/

noun

  1. a conqueror, especially one of the Spanish conquerors of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century.

Yes, conquistadors used to be a group of white colonizers who are well-known for conquering countries through murder and slavery, and killing thousands of people through the spread of diseases (Thanks GameSpot, for this wonderful explanation). Even though this ravaging, pillaging, and disease-spreading band of brethren roamed the earth over five decades ago, there are still people who are shocked to the core by their name.

Respawn got wind of the controversy caused by their Charged Conquistador SNAFU and was quick to respond through Twitter, after renaming the legendary Wattson skin “Chaos Conductor”. Is anyone going to be offended by that? Probably, but we’ll find out soon enough, I guess.

Oh well, at least we’re able to play Apex Legends without bearing the guilt of being a Charged Conquistador anymore. Happy days!
