The Cowboy Formerly Known As McCree renamed Cassidy

There comes a time where you gotta stop running from the past and face the future. Bad things happen, and all you can do about it is make sure nobody will remember who did it. By changing your name, for example. That’s why Blizzard chose to have Jesse McCree’s name removed from their hero-based shooter Overwatch. Because “He who shall not be named” felt like an awkward alternative, the developer went with Cole Cassidy.

In case you didn’t get the memo, Jesse McCree – the popular gunslinger in Overwatch – has been carrying a pretty big burden lately. Named after a former Blizzard lead designer who’s been shunned after the ongoing harassment case, McCree just didn’t identify as McCree anymore. All affiliation with the real Jesse McCree had to be discarded. Therefore, starting tomorrow, Cole Cassidy will be the name to remember. If you ask me, TCFKAJM would’ve worked too. Then again, the world is dominated by abbreviations nowadays.

The most prominent question on everybody’s mind seems to be if Cassidy will get his own story arc. You know, to explain how Cole Cassidy came to be. The answer to that is yes. In a previous blog post – announcing the name change – Blizzard already talked about a new narrative arc regarding McCree. That was deliberately postponed to incorporate the name change. So for now, all we gotta go by is a shifty caption that came with the Tweet.

“The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago. Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become.”

One thing’s for sure, if your name is Cole Cassidy, you can forget about getting a job at Blizzard. The development team has decided not to name in-game characters after real employees. Having one character named after a douchebag was enough, apparently.
