The name’s Remaster, GoldenEye 007 HD Remaster

It’s safe to say that Nintendo’s latest Direct has left GoldenEye 007 fans “shaken, not stirred”. The classic N64 shooter is officially getting its long-awaited and previously canned HD remaster. With the game coming to both Switch and Xbox One and X|S, separate deals have been struck to give both camps some form of privilege. And that’s where things become as murky as a dirty Martini.

But before we get to that, let’s see what Rare’s bringing to the table. According to the developer, “The original experience has been updated with improved control options (including dual analog stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported), a consistent refresh rate, and a full complement of achievements to unlock.” In other words, standard remaster stuff.

Great. Now, how about those deals? For Xbox, as reported by Xbox Wire, Game Pass Members get to play the game for free when it launches. The same goes for owners of the Rare Replay Collection, which contains the original GoldenEye 007. They will also get the upgrade free of charge.

Even if that deal sounds pretty sweet, Nintendo seems to have struck a better deal. Their player base might not have 4K Ultra HD support, but they’ll get online multiplayer. And it seems like this feature is Nintendo only since Xbox only mentions “the iconic split-screen local multiplayer mode”.

Well, that kinda sucks. Big W for Team Nintendo, I suppose. I mean, I don’t even have 3 friends to couch co-op with…

Oh well, maybe I should go out more and make some. Since the GoldenEye 007 HD remaster has no release date yet, I might have some time to ‘bond’ with other 007 fans.
