“Dude, where’s my car?” – EA pulls old NFS games from stores

If you were hoping to buy some classic Need for Speed games, you’re in for a hurting. EA has announced that it has pulled a few older NFS games from the digital stores. Luckily for us, there’s plenty of racers left, but it does feel like EA tried to pull a sneaky on a lot of gearheads.

Alright, let’s bite the bullet. Which games are now officially reduced to scrap metal? Need For Speed: Carbon, Shift, Shift 2: Unleashed, Undercover, and The Run are now no longer listed in major digital stores. EA did promise that these games are still available if you already own them. But new customers for these legacy Need for Speed games are shit out of luck. To make matters worse, all online functionality for these NFS titles will also vaporize after August 31, which is basically the core reason for the delisting.

As usual, the publisher emphasizes that it’s never easy to retire older games. They just need to, because they’re now “shifting gears to focus on the future of Need for Speed”. Not my words, but Max’s on Reddit. Max also likes to point out the fact that there’s a plethora of Need for Speed games left to enjoy. You know, games like Most Wanted, Rivals, Payback, Heat, and Hot Pursuit Remastered. So what seems to be the problem, officer?

Well, there isn’t really much of a problem when you think of it. Delisting older games is a pretty common thing. It’s just that the timing of it all has a whiff of “I hoped you wouldn’t notice” about it. Sending out the announcement on a holiday (Bank Holiday in the UK and Memorial Day in the States) is pretty low-key. Nevertheless, some people on Reddit don’t care about holidays, so it got noticed anyway.

Anywho, at least it gives EA and Criterion some garage space to cram some new NFS games into. Unfortunately, we might have to wait longer than some of us would like. To make sure that Battlefield 6 gets finished in time, all resources were diverted to that game, including the NFS team. Maybe we can race tanks or a Humvee. I dunno. Just a thought.
