Physical copies Forbidden West not upgradable to PS5 version

If you’re a PlayStation 4 owner who’s eagerly waiting on Horizon Forbidden West, there’s something you need to know before pre-ordering. Unlike many other PlayStation titles, Forbidden West won’t have an option to upgrade to the PS5 version. In order to get both versions – you know, just in case you’ll ever snatch a PS5 – you’ll have to buy the Digital Deluxe version.

This might come as a huge disappointment to many. Instead of offering the option to upgrade for a small fee, Sony seems to push people towards choosing one or the other. Or both, if you really want to own a disc and play the game on both generation consoles. And that really seems to piss people off. On Resetera, nobody can really muster any respect for Sony’s decision.

And who can blame them? Sure, for a few coins more you can get both versions digitally and if you absolutely want something physical, you can buy the Special Edition which comes in a Steelcase, but that’s not the point. The point is that SIE boss Jim Ryan has consistently been promising that consumers would always have a free upgrade option when it comes to cross-gen launch titles. And that promise just went down the drain.

Then again, if you’re one of those big spenders who’s going all-out, you’ve got nothing to worry about. In case you were wondering about the Collector’s Edition or that behemoth of a Regalla Edition, they both come with vouchers for both versions. I mean, imagine paying over two hundred smackeroos and only getting one edition. Preposterous!
