Just Cause dev reflects on canned Iron Man game in stark awe

Believe it or not but Avalanche Studios – the company behind Just Cause – were almost tasked with the impossible. At least, that’s what co-founder Christopher Sundberg claims. Talking to MinnMax, Sundberg went on to reveal that an Iron Man game was once in development at Avalanche. But “company politics” rusted up the process, something that is Sundberg actually grateful for. “It would have broken the studio completely if we had agreed to that.”

On paper, this Iron Man project could have been “really, really good”, says Sundberg, who left Avalanche in 2019 to form Liquid Swords. But the way things were going, it was a project doomed to fail. In his interview with MinnMax, some light was shed on the politics behind the development. And you might not always realize it when you play a game, sometimes bad things happen behind the scenes. Because like in any other business, things can get ugly in the gaming industry. When big companies want you to jump, you don’t ask “how high?” And that nearly ruined Avalanche in this case.

“It was, I was a mess by the end. It was like, shortening development time, increasing budget, we would have to hire 70 or 80 people to the team that I would have had the responsibility to find a new project for.

“But the development time was shortened down so much so it was impossible to do. It would have broken the studio completely if we had agreed to that.”

At the end of a project when the team is scaling down, that’s when you have to find a new project, and with that one year of development time cut from the original plan, it would mean that I had one year less to find a new project for a big development team which would have been impossible, and hiring all those developers would have been a complete nightmare, so it was for the best.”

Oh well, maybe EA feels like swooping up that one, which they supposedly already did. According to some sources, an Iron Man is currently in the works there, alongside a Black Panther game. But hey, if even Tom Henderson labels it a rumor, we shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions just yet.

Anyway, you probably made the right call, Christopher. Just remember:

“If we can’t accept limitations, we’re boundaryless, we’re no better than the bad guys.”
